  • Why Montessori

We focus on children in the early years, from 24 months to 8 years. Here they learn “how to learn”, in an environment that speaks of beauty, simplicity, order, good taste; and everything is at the child’s eye level. An enriched selection of programmed tasks enables the child to interact with materials and activities answering their particular needs at this stage of development. This helps the children swell with deep inner satisfaction, and glow with confidence. This success fills them with the happiness they need to get the most out of their school years. These years pass so quickly. You have a wonderful, priceless decision to make for your child. You will be amazed at the potential of this stage of human development. Modern research overwhelms us with evidence pointing to the importance of these years.

May River Montessori also values character as well as intellect and imparts a variety of life skills, such as manners and values, which are often lost in today’s world.

Our Families Make it all Possible

In large part, May River Montessori is a result of the selfless support of our dedicated parents, who give their time and talents each year to enrich the school. From organizing yard sales to building shelves for our small library, the parents are devoted to creating a place where children will grow and flourish. May River Montessori operates several fundraising opportunities throughout the year in an effort to keep our tuition at a rate that our families can afford. We could not raise the $50,000 needed every year through fundraising efforts if it were not for our dedicated parents. Click here to see our annual fundraising events.

    A Heritage of Love

In the mid-1980′s, May River Academy and Sea Pines Academy merged the school onto the Island. Thus, Bluffton lost its only facility to educate preschool age children. To fill this void, several mothers decided to start a new school. Many hours of time, talent and love were poured into the founding of the school which was chartered in 1987 (then under the name Church of the Cross Montessori School).

As a part of the community, we are demonstrating a commitment to the education of our children. Their days include music, art, library, catechesis, and an after-school program from 2:30 to 5:00. In addition to classrooms, our school features a library and two playgrounds.
