The Magic of Musical Theater at MRM: From Willy Wonka to How Does Your Garden Groove? At May River Montessori, musical theater is more than just a performance—it's an immersive learning experience that nurtures creativity, teamwork, and confidence in a way that aligns beautifully with Montessori principles. Our recent Upper School production of Willy Wonka was a shining example of this, showcasing not only the talents of our students but also the invaluable life skills they gained along the way. Willy Wonka: A Sweet Success From auditions to the final bow, our Upper School students poured their hearts into bringing Willy Wonka to life. They learned the value of dedication and hard work, rehearsing lines, perfecting choreography, and building a vibrant world of pure imagination on stage. But beyond the spotlight, they took on roles behind the scenes—designing sets and artwork, helping with props, costumes, and collaborating to create something truly special. This hands-on approach mirrors the Montessori philosophy of experiential learning, where students take ownership of their education. Musical theater allows them to step into different roles, both literally and figuratively, fostering resilience, adaptability, and a sense of community. The confidence gained from standing on stage, the problem-solving skills developed in creating props, and the teamwork required to pull it all together—these are lessons that extend far beyond the theater. How Does Your Garden Groove?—A First for MRM’s Primary Students Building on the momentum of Willy Wonka, we are thrilled to announce our next musical performance: How Does Your Garden Groove? On April 5, our Primary students (ages 3–6) will take the stage for the first time in this joyful, garden-inspired production. Much like their older peers, our youngest performers will not only sing and dance but also contribute to set design and costumes. And what better setting for this than our very own MRM gardens? This performance will be a celebration of nature, creativity, and collaboration—essential elements of both the Montessori classroom and musical theater. For many of our students, this will be their first experience performing in front of an audience. It’s a beautiful opportunity for them to build confidence, express themselves, and experience the joy of storytelling through music and movement. By engaging in every aspect of the production, from creating props to stepping onto the stage, they’ll develop a sense of pride in their work and an appreciation for the power of the arts. The Lasting Impact of Musical Theater Musical theater at MRM is not just about putting on a show—it’s about fostering growth, creativity, and connection. Whether through the fantastical world of Willy Wonka or the blooming gardens of How Does Your Garden Groove?, our students are gaining experiences that will stay with them for years to come. We can’t wait to see our Primary students shine on April 5, just as our Upper School students did in Willy Wonka. These productions are a testament to the magic that happens when children are given the space to explore, create, and express themselves in a supportive, collaborative environment.
